Before Corbin made his first onscreen appearance in Urban Cowboy, he had already acted in theater for over 20 years. He started off performing on stages in West Texas where he grew up, and eventually acted in plays all along the East Coast. Corbin is a classically trained Shakespearean actor, a style which has helped him in his film and television work.

Barry’s Texas heritage has also informed his approach to many of his characters and life in general. Raised in West Texas, Corbin’s family always encouraged his education and success. His mother LaMerle was a school teacher and his father, Kilmer Blaine Corbin, was a school principal, judge and state senator. He served two terms in the Texas State Senate from 1949 to 1957.
