KERRVILLE - Doyle Community Center Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy continues to serve as a powerful source of inspiration and a catalyst for action for the American people. Today, people of all backgrounds in our Nation carry forth his dream: to bring justice where there is injustice, freedom where there is oppression, peace where there is violence, and opportunity where there is poverty. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for the rights and dignity of all people, and his legacy inspires us to continue working towards a more just and equitable world. By honoring his memory and ideals on this day, we can reaffirm our commitment to creating a better future for all.
As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we invite you to join us for a special luncheon at the Doyle Community
Center. Join us on January 15, 2024, from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm for an afternoon celebrating Dr. King. This event aims to commemorate the enduring legacy of Dr. King and celebrate the principles of unity, equality, and community that he championed throughout his life. Our guest speaker this year will be Rev. Germaine Mathis. Rev. Germaine Mathis is a New Orleans native; the third daughter of Ethel and the late Maxwell Tropez; a sister of twins; a mother of two adult children, Lanston and Alaina; and the wife of Lawrence Mathis. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Germaine worked thirty years as a Registered Nurse, predominantly in home care, starting as a field nurse and then promoted to Nurse Supervisor, progressing to Director of Performance Improvement. Rev. Mathis began Seminary while still employed as Director of the Home Health Agency.
She graduated from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, with honors and a Master of Divinity. Following commissioning in the Louisiana Annual Conference, Germaine was appointed to her home church, Cornerstone United Methodist in New Orleans.
Germaine and her husband, Lawrence, traveled to San Antonio because of the mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Katrina. She was then appointed to extension ministries at Windcrest United Methodist Church, subsequently serving there with 4 other pastors for 3 years. In 2009, Germaine was appointed to Ernest T. Dixon United Methodist Church, from where she retired 9 years later in December of 2017.
Join us at the Doyle Community Center on Monday, January 15th from 11:30 am—1:00 pm to celebrate the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will be hosting a ‘working man’s lunch’ of stew, cornbread and salad to honor his commitment to the working class. “One day our society will come to respect the sanitation worker if it is to survive, for the person who picks up our garbage, in the final analysis, is as significant as the physician, for if he doesn’t do his job, diseases are rampant.” ? Martin Luther King Jr., All Labor Has Dignity.
