Year-round training sessions along with several active relief efforts have fully prepared Officers, staff and volunteers for the upcoming storm season. The start of hurricane season, June 1, brought an early National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration prediction for another very active year, with 6-10 hurricanes anticipated, and 3-5 of those projected to be major hurricanes. The Salvation Army prepares its EDS teams through year-round localized training events hosted throughout the state attended by staff, officers and committed volunteers. Training includes all aspects of response including logistics, food preparation and handling, safety, Public Information, Emotional and Spiritual Care and more. “The Salvation Army stands ready and prepared to respond whenever and wherever disaster strikes. Our network of trained staff and volunteers means that we are ready to respond locally at any given time, but also to deploy personnel and assets to large-scale disaster events no matter where they occur. Not only is this physically taxing and exhausting for staff and volunteers, but funding has increasingly become much more of a challenge,” said Alvin Migues, EDS Director for The Salvation Army in Texas. “The predictions for the upcoming hurricane season are daunting, particularly considering the intense weather we have already experienced.” The Salvation Army continues to rely on the generosity of donors and corporate partners to support response efforts, and 100% of every donation designated for disaster supports on-the-ground efforts. “We are doing everything possible to prepare for every eventuality to assist impacted families and Texas communities in the coming months,” said Migues. The Texas EDS team has responded to several disaster incidents throughout the spring, most significantly the widespread flooding that impacted South Texas in early April 2025. Salvation Army locations in Harlingen and McCallen were central hubs for relief efforts, and eight mobile feeding units served more than 42,090 meals, 40,200 drinks and 20,134 snacks. Cleanup kits, hygiene kits and food boxes were also distributed to families and individuals impacted by the flooding. Local staff and volunteers are often called to support disaster relief efforts in Texas, and occasionally beyond. “A typical disaster deployment lasts two weeks, and each day is challenging in many ways. Days are long and hot in Texas, beginning early in the morning and ending late after full days of service,” said Major Jeremiah Romack with The Salvation Army of Kerrville. “Here in Kerrville, we stand ready to support as needed. Our EDS teams continue to approach every situation with servant hearts and compassion, being committed to their service to others until no longer needed.” To support The Salvation Army’s ongoing disaster response efforts in Texas, go to helpsalvationarmy.org.
