City Of Kerrville Prepares for Potential Heavy Rainfall and Flooding
KERRVILLE, Texas (Sept. 29, 2026) – The City of Kerrville has moved to an increased level of readiness as officials prepare for the potential for heavy rainfall, flash flooding and severe weather later this week.
Current forecasts indicate the potential for widespread rainfall across the region, with rainfall totals generally ranging from 2 to 4 inches and isolated amounts potentially reaching 8 inches. The greatest potential for heavy rainfall is currently expected Thursday; however, uncertainty remains regarding exactly where the heaviest rainfall will occur.
City departments are coordinating preparations and positioning personnel and resources to respond quickly should conditions deteriorate.
Emergency Management is working closely with Kerr County and other public safety partners and is contacting designated shelter locations to ensure they are prepared should evacuations become necessary.
The City’s Streets Division has staged barricades at low-water crossings, bridges and roadways prone to flooding, with additional barricades prepared for other locations as needed. Crews, with assistance from Parks and Recreation staff, have filled several hundred sandbags and positioned pallets of sandbags in flood-prone areas.
Crews have also been working to clear drainage areas and make temporary repairs to infrastructure damaged during previous flooding. Street Department personnel will remain on standby through Sunday and are prepared to transition to extended shifts if necessary.
Fire and EMS personnel are preparing swift-water rescue resources, including a boat that will be staged for rapid deployment. Additional state resources, including water-rescue capabilities, are also available in the area, and further assistance can be requested if needed.
Public Works personnel are monitoring critical water and wastewater infrastructure, including facilities and utility lines that could be affected by rising water. The City is also prepared to transition water operations if conditions affect the surface water treatment system.
Information Technology personnel are preparing communications and data systems in the event the Emergency Operations Center is activated.
“The City is preparing for the potential impacts of this weather event while continuing to closely monitor the forecast,” city officials said. “Our priority is life safety. Residents should remain weather aware, avoid unnecessary risks and be prepared to act if conditions change.”
Residents are strongly reminded to never drive around barricades or attempt to cross flooded roadways. Water over a roadway can be deeper and faster-moving than it appears.
City officials will continue coordinating with Kerr County and state partners and will provide additional information as the forecast becomes clearer or conditions warrant.
Residents should monitor official City of Kerrville communication channels and trusted weather sources for the latest information.
